Rat King, Santa Claus, Sugar Plum Fairy and Mayor Sam Adams at The Galleria on Wednesday

TIS THE SEASON: Celebs, like Santa Claus and The Sugar Plum Fairy, came together with city and business leaders, like Mayor Sam Adams, on Wednesday to officially launch downtown’s holiday programming and shopping season, including four temporary holiday pop-up shops, a storefront art installation, the annual holiday lighting program and the second annual “Holidate With Downtown,” a seasonal promotion that features in-store events and free parking at SmartPark garages when shoppers enter between 4-6 p.m. every Thursday evening in December.

The four pop-up shops showcase local independent art and design talent, encouraging shoppers to seek out unique gift offerings downtown this holiday season.

In addition to supporting emerging retail entrepreneurs, the shops temporarily activate vacant storefronts, which improves the pedestrian environment downtown and allows property owners to showcase their vacant space for potential tenants. The pop-ups will remain open through December 31, 2011.
