Marissa's Musings: Portland Fashion Week, Night One
Tito Chowhurdy and Mayor Sam Adams unveil runway at Portland Fashion Week
MARISSA'S MUSINGS: Wednesday night launched Portland Fashion Week 2011. With a speech from Mayor Sam Adams to kick things off letting the patrons know that the runway was made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. Portland – the only city that has a sustainable runway for Fashion Week in middle of a North Portland shipyard. Yep, that sounds about right.
Titled Catapult: The Emerging Designers Competition, in which the audience, and a panel of super knowledgeable judges, got to vote for the winner. Audience participation in a Fashion Week, yep, the also sounds about right - Portland.
The designers for the first night were as followed: House of Summer, Silkwood Collection, Michelle is Well, Grishley by Amanda Grisham, Studio SKB, AM Renegade, Moontess, Lizz Basinger Designs and Beck Ross (2011 Project Runway contestant) Wicked Quick.
Here are some highlights:
Michelle Is Well, I’ve seen before and have loved pieces, but seeing the whole collection together made me rethink my adoration. My favorite look of hers, that I would no doubt, buy and wear all winter, is a lovely coral blouse worn under the cutest forest green mini-jumper-dress. LOVEEEE, but as a whole the collection was spotty.
Grishley was exactly what you’d expect if your sponsor was Pendleton Woolen Mills. Playing with the classic patters of the Oregon brand, she femmed it up adding petticoats, fur trim, and a lil’ bit of leather. The black leather mini skirt with fur collared wool kimono jacket tied together with a black leather belt was the stand out look for me.
Lizz Basinger may have been my favorite of the night as her high-waisted skirts, girly dresses, bright shorts and adorable bright yellow raincoat, were not only cutting edge but also wearable.
I might add AM Renegade had its moments – the blue and white-stripped asymmetrical dress was absolutely gorgeous. And I’d wear that pair of patterned leggings she showed in a heartbeat.
I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings; my only hope is that this one gets started on time (Wednesday night ran an hour and a half late due to a tech snafu). But if I know the crew of PFW, specifically Elizabeth Mollo, as well as I think I do, I can guarantee that won’t happen again. She is a master of the runway, and I’m sure the technical glitches will be taken care of! —Marissa Sullivan
