SUPER WALKERS: What are superheroes...really?

Just average citizens who, when given the right opportunity and inspiration, rise to the occasion and try to make the world a better place.

That's why it was incredibly appropriate that so many not-so-mild-mannered citizens of our fair city dressed up as their favorite superhero on Sunday for Cascade AIDS Project's 25th annual AIDS Walk.

This legion of Super Friends filled Pioneer Courthouse, which for the walk, was about 10,000 strong. There were also superheroes from the both the public and private sector including my own personal hero: Mayor Sam Adams (dude, I really think you should get back into the mayor's race).

Prior to the walk (where we joined the nice kids from Nike) we joined up with many of the walks "heroes" at a breakfast served high above the city at The Nines Hotel Departure Restaurant and Lounge. That's where we met the 11-year-old Alazar who raised over $9,000 for the walk. We also had a chance to visit with CAP's incredibly cool Executive Director Michael Kaplan and his partner, the super sweet Sean Sasser. Back down at the Square I have to tip my hat to Andrew Shayde, a former Amazing Racer who put together the super duper "Ultimate Alliance" which raised an AMAZING $30,000 for a walk that raised somewhere in the vicinity of $400,000.

Now that truly was a heroic effort.
