Stardar Report: John Lurie Spotted in Portland, Ore.
John Lurie in a scene from "Stranger than Paradise"
CELEB-U-WATCH: John Lurie was recently spotted in Portland, Oregon. It's cool if you don't know who he is. The somewhat reclusive celeb would like to keep it that way.
Musician, actor, painter, producer and the arty image of the "indie outsider," many might remember Lurie as the co-founder of The Lounge Lizards, a jazz ensemble that everyone I knew in the 1980's was completely obsessed with. Lurie has also acted in nearly two dozen films including cult faves Stranger than Paradise and Down by Law. In the 90's he had his own tv series, "Fishing with John," and was seen on several seasons of "Oz."
And then, according to this New Yorker article, he just...disappeared.
That was until last week. That's when Carlee Smith spotted him downtown.
"He was walking on SW 11th and he caught my eye," said Smith, the co-owner of downtown's Fat Fancy boutique.
Smith approached him and said, "Hey, you look so familiar." His reply? "I used to be famous," said Lurie.
That's when Smith said, "Your John Lurie, Man! You're still famous!'" That's when they started to talk. "He was surprised and pleased I knew who he was," said Carlee.
When asked why he might be town Smith couldn't get him to answer other than to say he was just, "checking it out... seeing what's here."
