Baccus, Tula and Clover at Portland's Next Top Dog Model Contest

HOT DOGS: I have the opportunity to judge a lot of contests throughout the year. But the one I look forward to the most each year comes with lots of wet noses and tons of sweet kisses.

The 5th annual "Portland's Next Top Dog Model contest" benefits the Oregon Humane Society and was sponsored by Lexi Dog Boutique & Social Club and the Hotel Monaco. It encouraged dogs of all ages, shapes, sizes and personalities to enter. And they do. From 11-ounces to over 100 pounds these pups truly represented. As did their "fans" who held signs and wore t-shirts in support  of their favorite contestant.

This year's competition—which was held Thursday night at the Hotel Monaco, Portland's most pet-friendly hotel—was soooo intense. Judging this annual contest is a little bit like judging Miss America, except these contestants are pooches, not princesses (and I have a sneaking hunch our four-legged friends might be better at geography). For this contest, the judges are "allowed" bribes. And, omg, did we get bribes. My fellow judges, including such local celebs as Helen Raptis, Mitch Elliott, Sheryl Stewart and Stephanie Kralevich, had the sweet treat of  watching the 24 finalists wag their tails and show off their tricks.

Doggie contestants were divided into two categories, small dogs (under 30 lbs) and large dogs (30 lbs and over). All finalists receive gift baskets valued over $100, and the two Top Dog Model winners—big boy "Baccus" and little "Clover" received prizes valued over $2,000! It's always kind of crazy and always a lot of fun.
