JOEY BUZZER: Joey Arias is a kick.
A real-live, honest-to-goodness, balls-tucked-to-the-wall, way-beyond-this-time empress of the night.
Perhaps best known for his work as a performance artist/drag icon in the bowels of New York City dear Joey is the muse of several fashion designers and originated the title of emcee/mistress of seduction in Cirque du Soleil's erotically-charged, long-running Las Vegas stunner known as "Zumanity."
Now he's coming back to Portland with his documentary "Arias With A Twist."
It kicks off the incredible QDoc Festival tomorrow night at the Clinton Theater and is followed by an opening night party (and performance by Joey Arias accompanied by our own Thomas Lauderdale) at Mother's Bistro and Lounge.
I've had the honor of being in Joey's company when the "downtown legend" has visited the Northwest before. There was that night at Dante's I will never forget (and probably should never talk about) and my days sipping coffee with him in Seattle. I love the guy and his documentary is an utter delight. Directed by Bobby Sheehan "Arias With A Twist: The Docu-fantasy" documents his 2008 stage collaboration with master puppeteer Basil Twist as well delves deep into the backgrounds of these two diverse entertainers. Featuring Joey's uncanny ability to channel the voice of Billie Holiday and Twist's twisted marionettes the film is pure fantasy, pure fun and not to be missed.
