Mighty Aphrodite: Kylie Minogue In Las Vegas
VIVA LAS KYLIE: On the day of our 16th anniversary, I thought it might be nice to share with you how Juan and I celebrated the momentous occasion: we went to Las Vegas.
We weren't there just to gamble (although we do did a little bit of that) or just check out the high end restaurants and shops (and we definitely did a bit of that).
We had a mission: to see Kylie Minogue.
Kylie wrapped up the North American leg of her "Aphrodite Live 2011 Tour" last Sunday with a sold-out performance at Caeser's Palace in the same venue where Celine Dion does her big gigs. Her Vegas show followed weekend shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
And what a show it was.
Juan has always been a big Kylie since her days of doing the "locomotion," but had never had a chance to see the dance music diva in a full-blown Kylie concert (there was that one time we watched her play The Jingle Ball in Tacoma, but that was just two songs). He always thought he'd have to go to Europe or Asia to get the full "Kylie experience." Scoring two good tickets to her final show in the states wasn't easy, but was worth the effort.
And a Herculean effort goes into her spectacular Dolce and Gabbana'd concert: singers, dancers, acrobatics and some of the most stunning visuals (and costumes) I've ever seen on a stage filled Kylie's jam-packed two-hour-plus show.
In fact, it wasn't so much a show as it was a giant love-fest/party where Kylie just so happened to be the guest of honor. Her themes—Greek and Roman myths, show-girlie costumes and lots of hot man flesh—played perfectly in over-the-top Vegas. And she was in great voice. We'd been told that, due to the complex staging, she didn't spend a lot of time talking to the audience, but that night she was a chatty Kylie, talking about her tour experiences and how much she loved her cast and crew. She also soaked up all the attention her gay male-infused audience bestowed upon her, even cracking up during a couple of songs as her "boys" bombed her with love.
All that was missing was the fountains of water that was part of her European tour. But even without the H2O show, Kylie made a stunning splash in Las Vegas that none of us, especially Juan, will ever forget.
