RIGHT ON: Basic Rights Oregon's 18th Annual Oregonians Against Discrimination Business Leaders Luncheon was held at the Oregon Convention Center today. It's always one of my favorite luncheons. And it's not just because my partner, Juan Martinez, is BRO's Development Director.
It's because it gets right to the point—in less than fifty-five minutes. In less than an hour thousands of dollars are raised to protect basic rights for all Oregonians as well as hear from some amazing individuals, including keynote speaker Governor John Kitzhaber who said: “We are working hard to rebuild Oregon’s economy, and to do that we must be inclusive of all Oregonians." Prior to his speech I had a chance to speak to the Governor who is a gym rat who I see everyday at my fitness club. We talked about his workout and how he makes sure to include an aerobic element to all his lifting. I can only hope he confronts all the heavy lifting he needs to do in Salem with the same gung-ho 'tude he shows at the gym.
Speaking of gung-ho, one of the stars of Basic Rights Oregon recent television ad campaign, Antoinette Edwards, energized the audience as she spoke about her family. There is something very special about Edwards and I've never seen so many smiles from a group of business folks as I did when I heard her speak.
At the luncheon, Basic Rights also presented The Standard with the 2011 Equality Advocate Award that recognizes a corporation, small business, or organization who has demonstrated outstanding leadership on behalf of LGBT equality here in Oregon.
