Marissa Musings: Billy Elliot In Portland
Curtain Call on opening night of Billy Elliot at the Keller Auditorium
I saw Billy Elliot opening night in Seattle, as well as Portland. That's where I was joined by my colleague Marissa Sullivan (among other local media types including FOX-12's Shauna Parsons and AMNorthwest's Helen Raptis). Here is Marissa's short take on the show:
SHOWTIME: On Wednesday night Billy Elliot The Musical opened to an enthusiastic packed house. I mean really packed. I was lucky to get a seat. Luckily Keller Auditorium doesn’t have a bad seat in the house. And that being said I don’t think any of the 2992 people in attendance left disappointed.
I am a huge fan of musicals and have always been in awe of the talent I see on stage. Last night brought a whole new level of awe because the majority of the cast was under 15 years of age. That was the case of the main character, Billy Elliot, played by Australian born Daniel Russell, one of four Billies who tour with the show—who flashed his talent all over the stage!
My favorite parts were the giant singing and dancing dresses, Billy’s cross-dressing friend Michael, played by Griffin Birney, and the piano man from the ballet studio who could do a killer jazz splits! But really, there is just too much good stuff to talk about (the set design was equally awe inspiring). So go check it out for yourself, that is, if you can get a seat.
Billy Elliot runs through April 17. Click here for show time and ticket information.
