"Some Days Are Better Than Others" Renee Roman Nose & Director Matt McCormick at PIFF

Marissa Sullivan continues her reporting from The Portland International Film Festival. Here is her take on one of the most talked about films to hit the fest:

PIFF RIFF
: Sunday night’s screening of Matt McCormick's Some Days Are Better Than Others,  part of the stellar PIFF, took place inside the Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium.  The film, shot in and around Portland, stars musician James Mercer (The Shins) and musician/actress Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney, Portlandia) as a 30-something and 20-something respectively, both lonely in love and life, needing a change and not knowing how to make it happen.

Director Matt McCormick was in house for a Q & A after the screening. Here is what I found out about his film:

1.     This is McCormick's, perhaps best known for his visual art installations, first feature film.
2.     He just got the news that it will be picked up to play nationwide in New York, San Francisco and     Seattle in the months of March and April. He mentioned the movie has a Facebook page and you should “like” it here.
3.     James Mercer basically had no acting experience when he took on the role of 'Eli' for this film.
4.     Portland is an important character in the film; he says he’s been studying the city for 15 years.
5.     The soap films that the character Otis makes in the movie are real. You can find the DVD’s here: http://www.dancing-rainbows.com/
6.     He had to film the demolition of Virginia Cafe six months before he even got funding for the film.
7.     He originally wanted Carrie for the role of 'Chloe' but after reading the script Brownstein felt more connected to the character 'Katrina.' He also mentioned that Brownstein told him that after filming the movie she wasn’t sure she ever wanted to act in a dramatic role again—it really drained her emotionally.
8.     The soundtrack by Matthew Cooper will be available April 26th.
