Party Report: Q Center Winter Gala at The Nines Hotel

Q POWER: Saturday was a "big" night at The Nines Hotel. As in big bands, big checks and big wigs—both the powdery French ones that point toward the ceiling and those powerful peeps that help to make this city tick. All that "big" biz helped make Q Center's Winter Gala, Viva La Q!, their biggest fund-raising night ever.
Highlights from the fete to benefit Portland's center dedicated to the glbtq community? There were plenty. Here are just a few: the presentation of an over-sized check to the Q Center, in the amount of $200,000, from the estate of the late great art collector, Ed Cauduro; watching Mayor Sam Adams quiet the crowd long enough to give the Robert Speltz Community Hero Award to Darcelle (and watching Darcelle turn the moment into a big advert for his just published autobiography); and seeing former Oregonian President Patrick Stickel out on the town, and out big in support of the gay community. Wow, that was news to me.
Other cool moments? Seeing the big band Shanghai Woolies strut and watching what felt like everyone in town smushing themselves into the Nike "Swoosh Lounge" to dance their ass off to DJ Lunchlady. I also had a chance to get up close and personal with emcee Courtenay Hameister's hoop skirt and political consultant Gwenn Baldwin's pumps, a sassy pair of Christian Louboutins heels that had every gal (and pretty much every gay guy) swooning. Congrats to Q Center's out-going Executive Director, Kendall Clawson, who is moving on to work with Governor Kitzhaber.
By the way, Ms. Clawson, that was one helluva going away party.
