Laurena Marrone

SOUL TO SEOUL: Laurena Marrone, known in Portland for everything from creating the largest Flamenco empire in the Northwest to representing Emmy Nominated artists, has done it again.

After shocking the dance community by selling her highly successful academy, Solo Flamenco, in 2008, she went on to create the successful company Grit PR & Promotion, representing stars like Rize’s Tommy the Clown.

While her departure from Flamenco seemed permanent, anyone who knows her wouldn’t be surprised to learn that while everyone thought she had left her passion for the art form behind, she was actually developing an innovative, experimental class concept with the assistance of famed Flamenco artist Maria Bermudez from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.  She plans to unveil the concept at a couple of local dance schools by spring. Laurena says “The class is rooted in the core, hands, posture and body movements of Flamenco, but is not a Flamenco class. I have to admit, I am happily uninvolved with the local Flamenco community and plan to keep it that way!”

But the most amazing part of this story is that Laurena, who was the first person to ever fuse Flamenco with traditional Korean music and present it in the country in 2005, will return to Korea in March to perform a one woman show and accept the formal honor as “Korea’s Flamenco Artist” by the country’s only Flamencologist, Dr. Joon Kim.  Kim discovered Laurena here in Portland while visiting one of her classes as a guest, and went on to pen three books about Marrone and organize her first appearance in Korea.

“I was shocked to receive the invitation via email from Dr. Kim just 2 weeks ago. While Korea was the only place I truly felt comfortable performing, I never expected the opportunity to return, nevertheless the honor I will receive,” says Laurena. “The show we have put together honors Korea, Flamenco and breaks almost every possible cultural and musical boundary. It represents who I am as a person and as an artist magnificently.”
