PostHeaderIcon Party On: Still No Lady, Darcelle XV Turns The Big 80

Darcelle XV and Mayor Sam Adams at Melody Ballroom

80 YEARS YOUNG: The party started pretty early for a Tuesday night, at 5:30 pm, and there were tons of blue-hair "ladies" in the room, so it did (sort of) look like a very elegant version of an "early bird dinner" at the "home."

But in fact, it was anything but. The swanky supper was to honor one of Oregon's most popular—and longest running—entertainers: Darcelle XV. And those old blue-hairs were actually young drag queens.

The evening celebrated Darcelle's 80th birthday (born Walter Cole on November 16, 1930) and the first floor of Southeast's Melody Ballroom was packed full of Darcelle's friends, family and more birthday cakes than I could ever count.

Hosting the affair was his "hair apparent" Poison Waters who introduced celebs in the room, including AM Northwest's Helen Raptis. Entertainment included the tinklings of pianists Michael Allen Harrison and Matthew Kern, an original song by hat lady Alyce Cornyn-Selby and hand-whistler Sally Cohn.

In honor of Cole's incredible contributions to our community over the years Mayor Sam Adams even proclaimed Nov. 16, 2010, "Darcelle Day."

Now that's what I call a birthday party. Well, it could have included a few strippers, but there were probably too many medical alert bracelets in the room for all that excitement.
