The Oregon Symphony, Thomas Lauderdale, Darcelle and Storm Large at Countdown to Carnegie

STARRY NIGHT: "They've never sounded better."

James DePreist said it. And Thomas Lauderdale delivered that message Saturday night. It was onstage of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and just minutes prior to the Oregon Symphony's opening overture for their very special "Countdown to Carnegie" concert.

And it was a very special concert indeed. Not only did it feature piano-prince Lauderdale caressing the ivories on a rousing rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue" backed by the full symphony, it also included performances by poets Matthew and Michael Dickman as well as tunes from the always tempting Storm Large who donned Oregon Symphony conductor Carlos Kalmar's own tux tails and trousers (in bare feet no less) for her takes on such classics as "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "The Lady is a Tramp."

Speaking of "ladies," joining the gang for this all-star night was the one and only Darcelle XV who simply dazzled the crowd when she helped belt out "New York, New York."

After the show, the nearly 80-year-old Darcelle joined Large, Lauderdale, Kalmar and others for a quick drink at The Heathman. That's where the "shy boy from Linnton" said the evening was one of the highlights of his life and the culmination of his long career. "I'll never forget this night," said Darcelle.
