Burning Up The Keller: Darcelle, Dad & The Dancing Boys
Darcelle, my parents Sparkie and Ed Beck, and Roxy LeRoy at Burn The Floor
PARENTS NIGHT OUT: The headline says it all. And it pretty much says something I never thought I'd ever say: Dad did okay around the gays.
For his 70th birthday I decided to give my father, Ed, the gift of ballroom dancing vis a vis the production of "Burn The Floor."
So last night my parents, Ed and Sparkie (after some anxious moments trying to find parking downtown), joined me and my partner, Juan, for a light dinner at Huber's and the theatrical experience that is "Burn The Floor."
We arrived at the theater a little early, so Ed and Sparkie had a chance to meet our friends—including Darcelle and his partner Roxy.
My dad loves those guys. And he seemed to be okay when I kissed the cheek of almost every guy at the theater; something my Pop had never seen before.
He had also never seen Burn The Floor which features the type of salsa-y stuff you see on "Dancing with the Stars" (my parents favorite tv show, my dad thinks Bristol Palin has a shot at next season) and "So You Think You Can Dance." Neither had I.
And I loved the show almost as much as he did.
We both loved the dancing, which via 20 champion dancers from around the world, was tight, bright and, as the title indicates, on "fire."
But truthfully I think he really enjoyed all the scantily dressed ladies, as much as I enjoyed all the oiled and buffed up nearly naked dudes.
Wow.
Okay, so the music has its cheesy moments, and there a couple of numbers that fall flat, but if you want to see a night of really incredible booty shaking, Burn The Floor, which runs through Sunday at the Keller (a place my mom calls the Helen Keller Auditorium) is the place to be.
And, no this is not your parents ballroom dancing, even though my parents loved every minute of it.
