STARRY NIGHT: Aug. 14 will definitely be a night to remember.
That's the evening Portland's own Newmark Theatre will turn into one long red carpet for the likes of movie legends William Hurt and Cate Blanchett.
The occasion is the culmination of a collaboration between Oregon's own Artists Repertory Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company who, together, bring to Portland the world-class production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill. The play is directed by Andrew Upton who, together with his wife Cate Blanchett, is Sydney Theatre Company’s Co-Artistic Director. It stars a mix of Aussie and U.S. actors including Hurt (who currently resides in Oregon), Robyn Nevin, Luke Mullins, Emily Russell and Todd Van Voris. The play, about a morphine addict and her three whiskey-slugging family members, one of whom has a soft spot for chubby whores, has already received rave reviews in Sydney, and now, we get to see it.
That is, if you work fast. The original Portland dates have nearly already sold out, and the extended run through Sept. 5 is going fast. It looks to be the biggest locally (co)produced show ever done in Portland, all because of Allen Nause (Artistic Director at Artists Rep) and William Hurts' friendship. That connection dates back to 1975 when they were both actors at Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
