Road Trip: Bend Ore.'s Garden Party For Basic Rights

Bend's Marjorie Chandler and Basic Rights Oregon's Jeana Frazzini
SUMMER OUT OF THE CITY: Deep in the heart of Bend, Oregon, on the banks of the Deschutes River, and not far from Summer Festival, in the expansive riverside garden of a mansion that could have easily been transported from upstate Connecticut, Basic Rights Oregon shared stories of what it's like to work in securing rights for all communities. Held at the Mill Pond home of the ever gracious Susan Cooper and Marjorie Chandler (the widow of former Bend Bulletin Editor Robert Chandler, she is pictured above, left, with BRO's Executive Director Jeana Frazzini) the timely event gathered a group of nearly 100 central Oregonians (jncluding Becky Johnson, Susanne Orton, Matthew Bowler, Polly Gervais, Sue Holleran, Sara Weiner and others), and a few out-of-towners who came to support full equality for everyone. Following the early-evening event my partner, BRO Development Director Juan Martinez, and I had a chance to visit with my aunt and uncle, Judy and Bill A. Smith, at their high desert home. What a great trip.
