The Original Celebrates 1st Year With New Menu Items

DINERANT DINING: Chef B.J. Smith of The Original—the innovative "dinerant" at the corner of Southwest Sixth and Oak Street—showcased his latest dinner entrees last night to a group of food-loving writers in honor of the resturants first anniversary. Gone are the eye-opening openers such as a "flight of hot dogs" and fried bologna sammies. Those kitsch-makers have been replaced by more traditional diner fare including chicken-fried steak and beef stroganoff as well kobe top sirloin and 72-hour beef brisket. You'll still find the much-buzzed about Voodoo Doughnut Burger and the ever popular poutine on the menu, but those two crowd pleasers are only available on the lunch and late night menus (The Original serves until 4 am on Friday and Saturday). Those attending the dinner included Willamette Week's Ben Waterhouse, Portland Picks Alisa Sloan, and food-centric writers Lucy Birmingham and Elizabeth Fuss among others.
