The Beat Is On: PDX Idol Reunites Drag Race Judges

GLEE ME: Portland Idol kicks off this Thursday at Red Cap Garage. And much like the just-finished Drag Race, this weekly competition is out to crown the best. But instead of a fierce drag queen with golden threads, PI is looking for a fierce singer with a golden throat. According to one of its presentors, Justin Buckles, Red Cap had nearly 100 potential contestants audition (see poster above) and have already narrowed the group down to the final 12. "We feel that we have 12 amazing singers who are going to be able to represent themselves very strongly throughout the event," says Buckles. And like Drag Race no one will be eliminated and will stay on for the entire run of the event until the winner is crowned July 29th during the show's finale. It will also include local celebrity judges including Animotion's Bill Wadhams, 105.1's Mitch Elliott, actor Rob Sample, and the return of Red Cap's Season I Drag Race judges Mother's Bistro chef/owner Lisa Schroeder and myself, Byron Beck. This should be fun.
Portland Idol, Red Cap Garage, 1035 Southwest Stark St., (503) 226-4171. 9 pm, Thursdays thru July 29.
