Juan waves from the stage at Columbia Theater, Host Marco Davis, and the beautiful people of Astoria dance the night away

DRAGSTORIA: I've already nominated Astoria, Oregon as the coolest place in Oregon, next to Portland (of course).

Now I just think Astoria might be the weirdest.

Take this weekend, for example. Not only was the sun shining, but the whole city was lit up like a disco ball. I think that might have had something to do with the big drag show at the Columbia Theater. When we hit town (Juan and I were joined by Sam Adams and his partner Peter Zuckerman), everybody was already talking about Marco Davis and his big show: Dragalution. In fact there was a line around the block an hour and a half before the 10 pm Saturday late-night show.

Now, this was unlike most drag shows I've seen.  Many of the cast members were women in female drag.  A lot of audience was also in drag (including lumberjacks and shop keepers). Even the DJ, the totally cool DJ Gray Matter, was wearing makeup.  A lot of the songs were original recordings, in which the drag queens lip-synched to themselves a la Beyonce at the presidential inauguration and the choreography had a nice Jazz-er-cise kick to it.

The whole night was sort of like being at Grey Gardens Disco Party with cast members from both the Honey Boo-Boo reality show and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"  Many times throughout the night I couldn't stop staring at the entire spectacle. It was just sooo weird. And fun.

Rough and sparkly at the same time, Astoria, Oregon is a "To Wong Foo" kind of town. And the state of Oregon is better for it.

P.S. I love the Cannery Pier Hotel. They have the most beautiful views from their rooms and the hot tub stays open ALL NIGHT. How cool is that?
