Sarah and Chris Curtis-Fawley at Pacific Pie Co.'s 2nd Annual Pie Contest
PIE TIME: Pacific Pie Co. invited all Portland pie lovers to show off their mad baking skills in honor of National Pie Day on Sunday.
The SE 7th Avenue bakery/café called for entries for its Second Annual Pie Contest, naming one amateur and one professional baker the 2013 PDX Pie Champion, and boy, did they show up.
According to co-owner Sarah Curtis-Fawley the entries far outnumbered last year's contest, including one "Pie-rate" pie with an Octu-Pie" on top of it. Yes, Portland is keeping it weird, even in the pie category.
The winners this year included:
1st place: Ben Mabee, White Chocolate Banana Cream Pie
2nd place: Ali Schlueter, Cranberry Chess Pie
3rd place: Lisa Waugh, Raspberry Pie
Professional division, 1st place: Beth Leppek, I Dream of Tangerine
People's Choice Award: Megan Wieser, Five Spice Winter Squash Pie
The winning bakers get bragging rights and their pies featured on the restaurant's menu in February.
Today Pacific Pie Co. is celebrating the official National Pie Day, and are offering a a slice of sweet pie for $3 each (normally $4).
