Chuck Palahniuk, Chelsea Cain and Andy Mingo at screening of "Romance"
FILM TO WATCH: Andy Mingo is director/producer of a great new film, Romance. The film was adapted from a Chuck Palahniuk short story that was first published in Playboy magazine. I felt fortunate that my partner Juan and I were invited to a private screening of the film at the gorgeous home of author Chelsea Cain and her husband, film critic Marc Mohan. Marc was an associate producer on the film and even makes a brief appearance during a pivotal moment in a film that tells a very provocative story in a bold and funny way. In fact the story was so provocative it had to be approved by Hugh Hefner himself before it appeared in the pages of Playboy.
"Hef loved it," said Palahniuk at the screening on Saturday night.
And so did I. In the hopes that you will also see the film too, I won't share any spoiler alerts here, other than to say the "love story" stays true to what you would expect from the same author of "Fight Club" and "Choke."
For the party, Chuck provided a vegan "wedding cake" for the lead actors, who also attended the screening along with Mingo's spouse, author Lidia Yuknavitch, as well as other members of the cast and crew and special guests.
According to Mingo, 'Romance' was very warmly received at its world premiere at the Raindance Film festival in London in October. And, says Mingo, "although it is a short film (26 minutes) it has big legs that are barreling it towards the US Spring festival circuit." I hope so, it's a great film.
