Mardi Gras revelers at Irving St. Kitchen

MARDI PARTY: Fat Tuesday’s over. And today, people across the globe are giving up all sorts of things for the 40-day observation of Lent.

And 40 days might not be enough for some of the folks I ran into at last night's Bacchus-ian blow-out smack dab in the middle of Bourbon...I mean...Irving Street Kitchen.

Executive Chef Sarah Schafer has made it a bit of a tradition to turn this upscale Southern-style Pearl District restaurant into a New Orleans speakeasy complete with a massive Mardi Gras inspired meal that featured not one, but two, roast pigs (they had been on the spit since 4 am), kale salad, dirty rice, mac n' cheese, jambalaya, and of course king cake. Also: fresh oysters, angels on horseback (bacon wrapped oysters) and fried okra as passed appetizers.

Irving St. bartenders also mixed up signature Mardi Gras cocktails like Hurricanes and Sweet Tea punch, in addition to several others.

As for entertainment Don Bourassa was pitch perfect as the emcee for a group of entertainers that included the bands Pocket and Biscuits & Gravy as well as the burlesque performers Baby LaStrange and Nina Nightshade.

Laissez les bons temps rouler, indeed.
