POWER OF WHITNEY: You haven't really lived until you've heard a drag queen lip synch "Jesus Loves Me."
I witnessed that miracle and many more early Sunday night at Darcelle XV's as the five-member drag troupe known as Hot Chocolate—Poison Waters, Maria, Kourtni Capri Duv, Tiara Desmond and Alexis Campbell Starr—performed the songs of the incredible Whitney Houston in a tight 90 minute show entitled "Forever Whitney."
This was church, and these red hot mamas were preaching to the choir.
Word from the stage was that the show was so quickly put together that there wasn't time to do much more than sing...or in this case...lip synch. But, oh my goodness, what a show it was. If anyone doubted the power of song to heal, or at least gather us together in one big group hug, then this was the show to see. These ladies have performed Houston's songs their entire drag lives and it showed: from Whitney power ballads Iike "I Will Always Love You" performed by the heavenly Maria to the kick ass "Queen of the Night" unleashed in all its glory by the one and only Alexis Campbell Starr to the closing number, "The Greatest Love of All," performed in unison by this talented troupe, it will go down as one of the greatest nights of entertainment I've ever experienced.
When magic happens, as it did Sunday night, all you can do is sing a long.
