Pucker Time: 2nd Annual Perfect Pickle at Holocene
Pickle lovers Cary Clarke, KGW's Joe Smith and Dill Pickle Club's Amanda Tillstrom
PICKLE ME: ONLY in Portland would the love of pickles be paired with the love of history, urban planning, municipal functions and all things Oregon.
The Dill Pickle Club's 2nd Annual Perfect Pickle Fundraiser took place on Monday night at Holocene.
And, yes, it did indeed feel a bit like a live episode of Portlandia, minus Carrie and Fred screaming "We can pickle that!" And despite the fact that Carrie and Fred weren't there, this was still a very pickle-y Porltandia-ish party with plenty of pickle-and-policy wonks on hand as well as pickle-loving performers like Pete Krebs, Denver, Cécilia und die Sauerkrauts and DJ Anjali & The Incredible Kid. Voodoo Doughnuts even created a special "Perfect Pickle" doughnut that consisted of a pickle jammed into the doughnut's hole, and, truth to be told, sounded better than it tasted.
I had my chance to partake in on all the pickle madness as one of the judges of the "Perfect Pickle" contest. My fellow judges—Dave “Killer Bread” Dahl, my EaterPDX colleague Erin deJesus, Anne Marie DiStefano of Bread and Brew and Lola Milholland of Edible Portland—sampled ten different pickles in search of the "Perfect Pickle" from the likes of Biwa, Brass Tacks, Chop, DOC, Grain & Gristle, Olympic Provisions, Paley's Place, Picklopolis, Salt Fire & Time, Unbound Pickling and Yume Confections.
And, drum roll please, for the second year in a row, the winner was a puckery pick-me-up from Chop. It truly was a perfect pickle.
