Is This The Ugliest Piece of Art in Portland, Oregon?
THE HILLS HAVE EYES...AND A NOSE: You can catch me running almost every day running on North Willamette Blvd. It is a beautiful place to run.
That was until a couple of months ago, when an "artist" added a piece of "public art" to my run. Okay, maybe it's not that bad. But, it definitely sticks out in what is a fairly undisturbed area near an open sunken meadow we all call the "dog bowl" due to that fact everybody takes their dogs there to roam free.
This piece of art is by an artist from Washington state. I think he's from Seattle. I had a chance to speak to him when he created and installed it. And, of course, I don't recall his name (I was running and didn't have a pen). I do recall that he says he has done this before in other cities across the Northwest.
I have no idea if he worked with the city or neighborhood on this. Or if he was commissioned to do it. I have a sneaking hunch he just saw the hill and decided it need a two-story-tall face, with sunglasses, on it (it used to have a nose ring, too). I've wanted to take a few pics of it, and finally, yesterday I snapped some. A runner stopped to see the "art" piece—saying he could see it from several blocks away—and we both decided it was very "Portlandia-ish," or in this case, since the artist is from up north, a little bit "Seattle-ish."
Have you seen it? What do you think?
