Black Fri-Dazed: Parades, Shop, Trees, Shop, Eat, Shop

PORTLAND-SIZED: As is our new tradition, Juan and I like to hit downtown the day after Thanksgiving. It's not so much for the sales (okay, it is) but also because, on Black Friday, downtown Portland transforms into a bustling metropolis packed with people.
In the morning it was all about the parade—which actually continues to improve over the years. And I love that the sun was shining on Santa Claus.
In the afternoon it was all about the shopping. We made sure to check out the big and small stores that dot our downtown. I actually would love to stop calling the more petite-sized businesses "small." I think its time we called our local purveyors of product: "Portland-sized."
And, the early evening was all about the tree lighting ceremony. We didn't try to crunch our way into the square packed with 11,000+ people. We like to go up to Departure, on top of The Nines Hotel. Not only do you get a great view of the tree lighting (and you can drink up there), but the whole event, from that vista, feels a little like a scene from "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" when the residents of Who-ville fill the sky with song.
